The European Carton Excellence Award is the most important annual European competition for cartonboard packaging. Together with its customer Karl Knauer (Biberach) WEIG-Karton won in the category “General Packaging, Recycled Fibre”.

The entry was a packaging for toothbrushes of a well-known brand that does completely without a plastic cap and thus meets today's expectations of sustainable product packaging.

The pack is made from recycled, FSC-certified cartonboard. It features an innovative plant-based and consumer-friendly non-plastic window meaning that the consumer can still see the toothbrush head. The window film uses only GMO-free, fast-growing plants from certified FSC or PEFC forests. There is no need to separate the film from the rest of the packaging when recycling as it decomposes free from harmful substances. With sustainable packaging becoming increasingly important to consumers, the newly developed toothbrush packaging is attracting particular attention at the retail shelf.

"This cartonboard pack reduces the use of plastic which in turn reduces tonnes of waste. It is well designed, is very pleasing to the eye, owing to the use of natural cartonboard and is also very tactile. It’s a really nicely designed and well-made pack," was the comment of Dr. Janet Shipton, a member of the international jury.

This is the second time in a row that WEIG-Karton has won the coveted prize for recycled cartonboard produced at the Mayen cartonboard mill. With its packaging board made from recovered paper, WEIG supplies printers throughout Europe who use it to produce packaging for everyday goods of well-known brands.
